Forces facing Barbarossa (not including strategic reserves or 2nd Strategic Echelon):
Fortified Regions: 38
Inf.Div (Rifle) 90 divisions of which 60 are cat.1.
Motorised Division: 20
Tank Corps: 30
Heavy Tank Brigade: 10
Tank Brigade: 4
Cavalry Division: 8
Airborne Corps: 2
AT-Brigade: 10
Armoured fighting Vehicles (tracked) not including forces in Fortified Regions
KV-1: 2140 (on 2480 built)
T-34: 4674 (on 5120 built)
BT-5/7/7M: 2502 (on 7463 in service and 8060 built)
T-50: 880 (on 950 built)
T-26: 3750 (on 9665 in service and 11218 built)
T-40: 100
Total: 14,046
SP vehicles
KV-2: 100
ZIS-30: 48 (on 100 built)
Su-45: 432 (on 500 built).
Total: 560
TOTAL all AFV (tracked) not including Fortified Regions: 14,606
The Soviet General Staff intended to deploy up to 185,000 men (more or less equivalent to 10 Cat.1 Infantry of Rifle Divisions) in the Fortified Regions. Mobile reserves were planned as independent tank battalions, usually like a NPP battalion.
One can then assume that at least 24 tank battalions would have been attached to Fortified Regions, with a total of 744 T-26 light tanks.
TOTAL all AFV (tracked) including Fortified Regions: 15,350
TOTAL modern tanks (KV-1, T-34, T-50): 7,694
The number of Anti-tank weapons is also an important factor.
It is assumed that excluding weapons in Fortified Regions 5,790 AT-G would have been deployed, mostly 45mm but with at least 350 to 450 new 57mm (ZIS-2).
More than 2,300 PTRD/PTRS 14.5mm AT-rifles would have been deployed too, with a probable dilution of 4 AT-R for 1 Cy in Cat.1 Infantry division (Rifle Division), Motorised Infantry Division and Cavalry Division. _________________ Fantasque |

Total 2262 planes, of which 1,898 combat planes (excluding coastal reconnaissance planes), as 630 Bombers, 335 Dive bombers and attack planes, 715 Single engined fighters, 68 Twin-engined fighters, 150 long-range reconnaissance planes.
(OTL: 1,945 planes of which 1400 combat planes (excluding coastal reconnaissance) as 510 bombers, 290 dive-bombers, 440 single-engined fighters, 40 twin-engined fighters, 120 reconnaissance).
To this total are to be added combat planes operated by the Luftwaffe directly on the behalf of ground forces, principally Aufklärungsstraffeln (H) units.
By May 15th, were then operating in support of different Army Group:
4.(H)/12 with 21 Hs 126B and 18 Fw-189
4.(H)/21 with 26 Hs 126B and 15 Fw-189
2.(H)/23 with 31 Hs 126B and 7 Fw-189
4.(H)/23 with 28 Hs-126B and 14 Fw-189
2.(H)/31 with 19 Hs 126B and 21 Fw-189
4.(H)/31 with 17 Hs 126B and 19 Fw-189
for a total of 236 close range reconnaissance and observation aircrafts.
The complete total of Luftwaffe aircrafts earmarked for Barbarossa was then 2498 planes of which 2,134 were combat planes.
An internal RLM note dating of April 1942 suggests that if unit officers and cadre were highly experienced the number of freshly trained pilots and crew was important. This note stressed the impact of continuous offensive operations from the end of the "Campaign of France" onward on the Luftwaffe crew pool. Training curriculum had been severely disrupted in March 1941 and till summer 1941 because of the sending of training planes and instructors to operational units operating in the "Mercury" operation (airborne landings in Corsica and Sardinia) or in the Balkan-Greece campaign. Aircrew morale was uniformly high at the eve of Barbarossa, but the gap between very experience crews and younger ones was increasing.
II - The Rumanian Air Force or FARR (Fortelor Aeriene Regal ale Romania)
The FARR made the second most important contribution to Axis air assets on the eve of Barbarossa. FARR planes were integrated in the Luftflotte-4, operating on the bhalf of Army Group South.
FARR deployment included:
Flotila 1 Vinâtoare with 5 Fighter squadrons (36 Bf-109E, 28 IAR-80)
Flotila 1 Bombardement with 6 Bomber squadrons (38 S.M. 79B and 37 He 111H-3)
Flotila 2 Bombardement with 6 Bomber squadrons (11 SM. 79B, 25 Blenheim-I, 37 IAR-81)
Flotila 1 Aviatie de lupta with 6 Reconnaissance squadrons (72 IAR 37/38/39).
The FARR deployed then 284 combat planes for Barbarossa, but still has to maintain a significant fighter force at home to protect the Ploesti oilfields.
III. The Hungarian Air Force:
The Hungarian Air Force deployed its planes in combination with the Luflotte 2.
1st Fighter Regiment (with 56 Bf-109E)
4th Bomber Regiment (24 Ju-86 and 31 He-111)
1st Independent Long-Range Reconnaissance Group (15 He-170)
Total: 126 combat planes.
IV The Slovakian Air Force:
The Slovak Air Force was integrated too with the Luftflotte 2 and included:
11th, 12th and 13th Fighter squadrons on Avia B-534 (39 planes)
2nd, 4th and 5th Reconnaissance squadrons on Letov S-328 (38 planes).
