It is 2016-2020 all over again.
When they were watching society struggle with COVID, "it isn't real!" they screamed and yelled. Until they were the ones in the beds dying. In many cases, even after contracting it themselves and recovering, or having loved ones die from it, they went back to saying it was fake and that the vaccines were/are the real danger. <looks nervously at the news re: measles and bird flu in the US...>
"The Republicans, unlike those dirty fucking socialists/communists, care about our servicemen and other local care institutions, like our firefighters and policemen." Until they have to put their money where their mouth is and they fight tooth and nail over every single bloody cent.
People do not like hearing about problems or solutions that are complicated. They barely research the people they are voting for in the first place, or even remember what said person did past maybe 6 months ago, if that. In recent weeks/months I have been following the Democrat/progressive circular firing squad on the discussion forums and Discord. And it often seems to me that when arguing whose fault it is that they often miss the forest for the trees. Yes, retrospective action is needed, but sometimes the wrong conclusions are drawn. Because it is easier to say the Democrats screwed up their messaging with the average voter, or pinning the blame solely on Biden or Harris (or Hillary; those people exist, too) than addressing topics like the breakdown of media literacy in America. Frankly, when you lose against a candidate who is openly talking about political persecution of his enemies, threatening other countries and is seemingly just even more unhinged than last time - the fault cannot rest on his opposition alone.
Democracy, at its core, needs the average voter to be aware and able enough to not vote itself out of power, however faulty it was beforehand. The resources are there, the information is there, the lies were often extremely obvious, the last administration was extremely well documented. Regardless of the state of the information sphere... if one was genuinely interested in fact-checking Trump, the GOP, the Democrats, Biden and all the rest? It was there.
I think it is time to face the elephant (ha-ha) in the room that the current political system and voter base in the USA is broken, and not just because of the rot that has existed since the founding of the US (slavery, ethnic cleansing, genocide...). The poor openly vote against themselves. The highest officials in government are openly compromised, either by money or foreign entities. The legal system does not just operate on a two-tier system, but a system where, if you are simply rich and powerful enough, you can quite literally just break the law however you want. The oftentimes polite fiction of fair and just governing is eroding by the day, where just pretending to not be corrupt or out to break the system is simply not required anymore.
As is, I find it really hard to be too harsh on the Democrats when they are having to struggle with both the USA's long-standing structural issues and the voter base itself. Education has taken several knocks*, the voter base is increasingly ignorant of basic topics, many "news" channels have fully transitioned into propaganda, democratic institutions long held sacred are being eroded in real time, describing the current political system as anything but some form of plutocracy feels foolish, corruption previously at least privately hidden is fully open with basically nobody doing anything about it, etc.
It does not feel like a political realignment so much as societal breakdown on a fundamental level.
* Anyone remember "I love the poorly educated!"? I do. |

Maybe but it is the first time that even thoses who voted for Trump felt the weight of theirs own voting bulletin.
It change everything.
Like the story of the little town in West Virginia where the federal cuts has shut down the IRS antenna, firing 150 peoples. 150 peoples who were mostly the only income providers of this already poor area. 100% votes at 2024 election of course.
Farmers of Middle-West facing bankruptcy with the trade wars. Middle-West voted for Trump.
There are tons of exemples coming out in the media. Even elected Republicans officials have received the consigns from the party, to not attend any public gathering or debates to avoid recreminations under the views of camera. _________________ Les guerres de religion consistent à se battre pour savoir qui a le meilleur ami imaginaire
