patrikev a écrit:

I have discussed this matter with Japanese historians. Again, I am simplifying a complicated situation in this description, hoping to make the main points clear.

They make the following points.

- the japanese knew from about September 1944 that they had lost the war.

- despite this, there was no political way inside Japan to admit defeat and to stop the fighting.

- The period from late 1944 until the end of the war was about convincing enough of the IJA General Staff that the war was lost and peace had to be obtained at any price.

- The Japanese strategic victory at Okinawa was a setback for the 'stop the war' factions, which included much of the IJN and many of the zaibatsu and political establishment. (The US high command decided after Okinawa that no invasion was possible due to the expected US casualty estimates - they would blockade Japan, destroy food stockpiles, the railway system, and use poisons on rice crops)

- The Soviet invasion was a helpful factor as it politically undercut the IJA by removing the remaining political influence of the Kwantung Army - but the Kwantung Army had already been destroyed as a military force by the Americans in the Pacific, especially in Luzon and by the US submarine force aboard sunken transports.

- the great value of trhe nuclear attacks lay in providing a politically acceptable reason to sue for peace (an unanswerable weapon)

- the Japanese knew that the alternative was blockade, including destruction of the railway system which the USA had deliberately left intact. They left it intact because they knew that it was the only land-based system able to distribute food. Destroying it automatically meant that 20-25% of the Japanese population would die of starvation within 50 days, and (depending on weather and disease spread) up to 45-60% within 100 days. Japanese population would stabilise at about 25-35% of the prewar total at about the 200 day point.

- the war was also costing the death of about 100,000 Asian civilians per month in the Japanese conquered areas

- The Japanese held about 200,000 PoW, and additional civilian internees. The murder of these had already begun (see Sandakan Death March)

The use of nuclear weapons on Japan was, by this sort of analysis, a very fortunate event which saved many millions of lives, most of them Japanese.

The personal opinion of the Japanese historians I discussed this with was that in such circumstances, the Japanese would have turned inward to an isolation deeper than the Tokugawa Shogunate, completely abandoning the industrial era and returning to a near-medieval culture and technology level - but it was strongly stressed that this was purely personal opinion. To me that makes some sense as the city populations would die, only the more remote rural peasant populations, the most traditional rural petty aristocracy and the heads of the majors clans (plus the Imperial house) would survive in such a situation.

It is a terrible thing even to contemplate.
