ton idée, dite comme ça, me semble bizarre, tu peux detailler?

Question Question Question

bref, comment, quelles modalités prendrait ta proposition?

Fhaessig: Would the exchange FTL Reviews some of the drivers, in your opinion, esp. about the defensive capabilities of the Dutch?

No. The issue is Indonesian nationalism and that won’t alter. The Australian reasons for not supporting a re-introduction of Dutch colonial rule in Java and Sumatra remain valid in APOD and FTL. It is not possible to do it without massive repression and an extremely bloody war. At the policy level even the worst of the doubters were convinced by the Battle of Surabaya! Holland is a minor power on the wrong side of the planet. Do not forget that even in 1944-49 Canberra well understood that we live here, and the Indonesians are our next-door neighbours.

Sting01: I feel the very notion of muslim empire to be disturbing.

Facts are facts. There have been scores of muslim empires. Animist, Hindi, Buddhist and Christian religious groups in Indonesia do face religious persecution and all the non-Javanese ethnic groups regard the country as being ‘The Javanese Empire’. This is a simple reality and one they find irritating but little more than that. What is modern Indonesia other than the modern incarnation of Mataram, or for that matter Srivijaya? Muslims have run Empires with the best of them. We are fortunate that in South East Asia, Islam arrived over the trade routes and not (as it did in Europe) as a conquest ideology. So the form of islam in SEA is very different from the old-fashioned, violent conquest ideology version you see in the dystopian states of the Arab Middle East. You simply won’t see an analogue of Syria here, it’s the difference between ‘true believers in the Old Testament’ in the Middle East, and ‘true believers in the New Testament’ in SEA. The Darulislam (Darul Islam/Tentara Islam Indonesia) as founded by Sekarmadji Maridjan Kartosuwirjo in ’42 was an extremist sharia-based organisation. When it grew to the point of being a real threat to Sukarno (1957) it was annihilated. Entire DI districts were depopulated (as in slaughtered) to do this. Officially, only a few tens of thousands were shot. The census results show this to be an order of magnitude too low.

Citation:
I would prefer to rephraze it as "an empire with Islam as religion."

Again, this does not change the facts of history. Please bear in mind that freedom of religion is actually practised in Indonesia and is legally and constitutionally guaranteed. Note I have said it’s the Javanese Empire. And Javanese and Indonesian are two separate languages: Indonesian is Malay, the ‘language of international diplomacy’ of the great Johor-Riau Sultanate. Indonesia is an Imperial state with what, 741 different languages, 300+ different ethnic groups – it makes Austria-Hungary look like a walk in the park. This is why the national motto is ‘Unity in Diversity’ and the national philosophy is Pancasila:
1.Belief in the divinity of God, (in Indonesian, Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa).
2.Just and civilized humanity, (in Indonesian, Kemanusiaan Yang Adil dan Beradab).
3.The unity of Indonesia, (in Indonesian, Persatuan Indonesia).
4.Democracy guided by the inner wisdom in the unanimity arising out of deliberations amongst representatives (in Indonesian, Kerakyatan Yang Dipimpin oleh Hikmat Kebijaksanaan, Dalam Permusyawaratan dan Perwakilan)
5.Social justice for all of the people of Indonesia (in Indonesian, Keadilan Sosial bagi seluruh Rakyat Indonesia)

Note that Number 1 is GOD, not ‘Allah’. That is very, very important.

Citation:
While It May Seems at first glance a play with words, we Shall remember for Islam it can be only one rule: The Kalifat;… (etc)

I don’t really care and neither do the Indonesians or Malaysians – both of which are Imperial structures. Do not make the error of assuming Islam to be monolithic. SEA islam is VERY different to arab ME Islam. Wahabist and Salafist islamists (admittedly these are insanely extremist sub-factions) do not even regard Indonesians as Islamic, but as apostates who should be killed. This is why both states repress wahabists and salafists and also why they no longer survive being arrested when they get all … excited… about that whole jihad thing. Malaysia actually has a crime called ‘religious perversion’ which they use to charge wahabists and salafists under the Internal Security Act. Trust me, you do not want to get charged under the ISA in Malaysia, as you are guilty until proven innocent. There are some charges under it whereby just being charged with the crime attracts the death penalty. ‘Conducting an act of war against the King’ is one such, as the Kedah rebels found out! As the local police inspector said to me at the time 'hey, it makes the trial easy, just a case of bringing the guilty man in for sentencing and hanging is already ordained'.

The very best the Dutch could do is fight and lose badly (per OTL) in Java and Sumatra, which would poison the situation (greatly empowering Hatta and Sukarno) if they tried to remain in the Moluccas and some of the outlands. The politically smart thing to do would be to recognise Indonesia (based on Java, Sumatra, southern Borneo and the Flores chain) in plebescites and set up Allied states in the Christian areas like the Moluccas and the animist Dyak areas like east and west Borneo (plus western new Guinea). They could then protect their economic interests and population. But they were NOT that smart in OTL, and you’d have to find drivers for them to become smart.

If they stay stupid per OTL and try to impose their will by force and repression and succeed, I’d expect Australia to go to war with them in support of Indonesian decolonisation in the late 1950s as anti-colonialism peaked. The USA would support this move. And what choice would Australia have but to do this? We have to live here.

Please remember that the British in Malaya promised independence in '45 and worked consistently towards it – which was why they were able to crush Chin Peng’s MPLA.

Cheers: Mark

Dear Mark,

I am starting to think I shall begin to learn (seriously) english, as somehow I would concure (agree) with your pertinent analyze. And it lead me to the though I did miss read you, and stalled on the word Islam while I should have not.

On the other hand, reading Pancasila, make me remember Bahasa is not only Malaysia language but also Indonesia own!

So , if I may, I do wish to ask you a question : what would be the chances to get a full reshuffling of the deck; Malaysia and the muslim part of Indonesia fusioning (federation, confederation) by whatever way they may find possible, and the non muslim part being independant and into Oz sphere! Is that possible? Is that better? Would it be supported by Oz or even championed?

Hello Mark,

In FFO they have the French example, in Indochina but also in the rest of the French Empire.

There is a serious danger of misunderstanding here as we are speaking across a language barrier and a cultural barrier.

That said, the technology which enables us to do so is amazing!

My understanding of your question is: “What is the chance of a full change in South East Asia (SEA) with Malaysia and the Islamic parts of Indonesia forming a Federation, and the non-Islamic parts of Indonesia forming a separate nation in an Australian sphere of influence?”

My answer assumes this is the question.

There is no chance of ‘Malaysia’ and part of what is not Indonesia forming a Federation. ‘Malaysia’ did not exist at this time. What existed was the Federation of Malaya, Straits Settlements (Singapore and Wellesley Province), and the three Sultanates of Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak.

Indonesia existed as the Netherlands East Indies BUT it was a loose structure. The last independent Indonesian Kingdom (Aceh, in the far west) had only been defeated and occupied by the Dutch in 1922. In the far east of the NEI (West New Guinea) perhaps a third of the population had still never seen a white man.

Hatta and Sukarno worked with the Japanese as Indonesian Nationalists against the Dutch and they wanted ‘Indonesia’ to be formed under the banner of ‘From Sabang to Merauke’. In other words ALL of the NEI but nothing else. They knew and approved of the nationalist ambitions of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Datuk Onn Jaafar and the Kedah Clique, but knew that Malaya had a very different path to independence as the British were perfectly willing to grant it as they had been doing under the Doctrine of Responsible Self-Government as laid out in Lord Durham’s Report of 1832.

The Tunku well knew that UMNO (the United Malay National Organisation) would simply be submerged in Indonesia and that Malaya would just become an Indonesian province. He, Onn and UMNO had national ambitions, not provincial ambitions. I would suggest the Pelanduk Biography of The Tunku:
Tunku: His Life and Times, the Authorized Biography of Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj, Sheppard, Mubin, Published by Pelanduk Publications, Malaysia, 2007.

Besides, they don’t like each other very much. Old rivalries and grudges relating to centuries of piracy and various wars.

Straits Settlements would also never accept being part of Indonesia. Nonya Chinese dominated Straits Settlements, so the reason is obvious.

Australia would have no interest in acquiring its own ‘colonial possessions’ in eastern Indonesia. HOWEVER, it would support a post-colonial mostly-Christian nation in Eastern Indonesia exactly the same as it would support (and did support) Indonesia as a unitary nation. Except when Sukarno started Konfrontasi but even there we kept the fighting very quiet. In the case of a Christian-Animist nation built around the Moluccas and an Indonesia based on Java-Flores, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, Australia would support both. And try to be an ‘honest broker’ to lessen tensions between them.

A partial exception to this is that Australia also supported continued Dutch retention of Western New Guinea (WNG). WNG is entirely separate from all of Indonesia: it is ethnically Melanesian, not Malay and has absolutely nothing in common with Indonesia in terms of culture, language, ethnicity or anything else you can think of. The Australia of 1945 understood the Dutch and wanted them to retain WNG as a physical buffer zone between Papua-New Guinea, which Australia held as a League of Nations Mandate. However, Australia accepted the (falsified and fraudulent) 1965 UN ‘plebiscite’ which handed it to Indonesia.

Cheers: Mark
